Independent Study
Manchester Community Television’s Independent Study in Media Arts has gained unprecedented popularity as the program has continued over the years. Students interested in gaining hands on experience with broadcast journalism sign up for the MCTV ISMA course through their respective school. Through MCTV, students gain insight into creating programming for cable broadcast, political campaigns, city departments and so much more.
During the 2008-2009 school year, MCTV’s ISMA students developed “Media Leadership”, a program that gave students the opportunity to interview individuals who hold leadership roles in their community and throughout the state. Guests included Governor John Lynch, Dr. Annabel Beerel of Southern New Hampshire University, Michael DeBlasi of the Board of School Committee and Douglas Wenners, President of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
Students have the ability to cover political campaign rallies during election seasons as well as the opportunity to interview political candidates on location and in the MCTV studios.
Besides learning how to behave in front of a camera, students gain vital interpersonal and professional skills behind the cameras. Students are asked to create short programs through filming and editing, to visually explore the city around them, to develop lines of questioning for high profile interviews and so much more.
MCTV’s Independent Study in Media Arts Students have the city as their classroom, allowing them to get ahead of their peers and into better options for higher education.
